United for Libraries & Penguin Random House - 2026 Rural and Small Library Friends Grants

Deadline: Jan. 21, 2026

United for Libraries and Penguin Random House are awarding grants to Library Friends groups at small and rural libraries!

United for Libraries will award grants of $1,000 and $500 (totaling $25,000) to support eligible groups.
These funds will assist Friends of Library groups with priority projects, such as starting a museum pass program, launching a volunteer program, creating a youth advisory group, or hosting author visits. Libraries could also expand summer reading, develop bilingual kits or STEAM kits, build a Library of Things, upgrade maker space tools like a Cricut, refresh teen areas, or add new materials for bookmobile outreach.

Recipients will receive complimentary eLearning from United for Libraries, including a year of access to United for Libraries Learning Live monthly webinars, and training on how to leverage the grant funds to build support for the library and the Friends group. Grantees also receive complimentary registration for Friends of the Library Day of the United for Libraries virtual conference (July 30, 2026) and United for Libraries Friends virtual retreat (spring 2027).

Penguin Random House will award 20 in-kind book donation grants of $500. Applicants may apply for either a monetary grant or an in-kind book donation grant (but not both).

The grant application is available on the ALA Apply platform. For more information, visit the website:
