The American Library Association (ALA), in partnership with the Sustainable Libraries Initiative (SLI), is launching "Resilient Communities: Advancing Sustainability in and through Libraries," a new professional development opportunity for public library workers. “Libraries have an incredible opportunity to lead the way on sustainability,” said Rebekkah Smith Aldrich, president of the Sustainable Libraries Initiative. “This program is about giving library workers the tools and support they need to get started and feel confident making a real difference.”
100 public library workers will receive free tuition and support to complete the four-part asynchronous e-course, Sustainable Librarianship: Core Competencies and Practices. A six-month cohort experience is also included, in which learners will develop action plans, have access to mentors, and be part of a virtual community of practice.
Participants will be empowered to model environmental stewardship, social equity, and economically feasible practices to intentionally address climate change and co-create thriving communities.
